A Year of Natural Health & Beauty Tip #43: Soak Nails in Lemon to Remove Surface Stains

(via wonderwalls)

It’s no secret that I love to use lemons in my skin care. If you’ve been following along this year, you’ve already learned the benefits of using lemon in face masks and face scrubs, using lemon to help create natural hair highlights, and the amazing benefits of drinking lemon water.

Today’s tip is another great example of this humble fruit’s brightening benefits: lemon juice will fade and remove surface stains on your nails, including discoloration from dark nailpolish. As you already know (or if you’re new here, maybe you don’t!), lemon is a mild bleaching agent. Its safe to use on your skin to help fade age spots, but it’s equally safe to use on your nails to remove the lingering color on your nails that can sometimes result from very dark polish.

The best part is that you don’t even have to use a whole lemon. If you’ve already squeezed a lemon into water to drink or into sugar to make a scrub, simply dip your fingertips, one at a time, into the squeezed-out lemon half and swirl them in the remaining pulp until the color has been “bleached” away. So simple!

Stuff to Know:

  • If your skin is highly sensitive or extremely dry, rub your fingertips and cuticles with coconut oil first to help protect them.
  • Hyperpigmentation can be the result of underlying health issues or reactions to certain medications. If you have concerns about your nail discoloration, please see a health care professional.

Lemon for Removing Nail Stains

  • 1 lemon, sliced in half

To Use:

  1. Remove all nail polish first.
  2. Working one finger at a time, insert your fingertip into the pulp of the lemon and swirl it back and forth until the lemon juice has bleached away the stain. Depending on the strength of the discoloration, it may take up to five minutes to completely return your nails to normal.
  3. Rinse your hands and apply a rich moisturizing cream or coconut oil to your hands. Massage in well.
